OAS Zeolite
Zeolite is a 100% natural volcanic mineral. Zeolite is the general name for a large group of microporous minerals and was formed millions of years ago when volcanic ash clouds settled in saline sea water. Through the interaction between volcanic ash particles and salt, a type of clay layer formed on the seabed.
Under the influence of hot water, caused by the Earth’s geothermal activity, this clay layer transformed into a soft, porous rock: zeolite.
Natural zeolites exist in various types, each with specific properties. However, there is one natural type of zeolite that has characteristics suitable for use in aquariums and ponds, namely clinoptilolite.
This form of zeolite has a honeycomb structure with many cavities and channels. As a result, zeolite has a large internal surface area.
This makes it capable of retaining a significant amount of liquid. For this reason, zeolite is also commonly used as an absorbent material in items like cat litter and bird cages.
Because zeolite also has the ability to effectively bind ammonium and ammonia, it is ideal for use in your aquarium in the following situations:
- when setting up a new aquarium
- as filter media in biologically heavily loaded aquariums, such as those with many fish
- as filter media in aquariums where the biological cycle is incomplete, such as plantless tanks
It is important that zeolite be the final stage in the filtration process. If not, ammonium will not reach the filter media, preventing proper development of bacterial cultures.
This aquarium zeolite is suitable for use in freshwater aquariums and ponds.
Note: as mentioned, substances easily adhere to zeolite. Therefore, it is not recommended to use zeolite in your filter when adding medication to your aquarium.
The used zeolite should be replaced with fresh stones after 4 weeks.
Size: 4–8 mm.
Contents: 1 liter.
