SL-aqua More Nature Black Soil – Active Substrate for Caridina Shrimp and Aquarium Plants
The SL-aqua More Nature Black Soil is a black, pH-lowering aquarium substrate that we especially recommend for hobbyists keeping Caridina shrimp or setting up a healthy planted aquarium. What sets this substrate apart from many other brands is the hardness of the granules. They are fired to create a durable structure that resists breaking down over time. This keeps your substrate loose and well-aerated for years, helping to prevent anaerobic spots and extending the lifespan of the substrate.
Why this is an excellent foundation for your aquarium
- Stable water parameters: The substrate contains natural organic acids that bind carbonate hardness (kH) and lower the pH to approximately 5.5–6.5. This is the ideal range for fish and shrimp from soft-water habitats.
- Natural biological filtration: Thanks to its highly porous surface, each granule acts as biological filter media. Beneficial bacteria colonize the substrate in large numbers, helping to maintain clean and healthy water.
- Nutrients for the first six months: The granules contain enough nutrients to support vigorous plant growth during the first six months. The nutrient composition is carefully balanced, making it safe even for sensitive shrimp species.

This short video shows the granule structure and how the substrate behaves inside an aquarium:
- Not suitable for digging fish: If you keep fish that constantly dig through the substrate, sand is a better choice. Digging fish may cause slight, persistent cloudiness with active substrates.
- First fill: The water may appear cloudy when filling the aquarium for the first time. Don't worry—your filter will usually clear this within a few hours, leaving crystal-clear water.
- Choose compatible species: Only use this substrate for fish, shrimp, and other inhabitants that prefer acidic water. Fish or crayfish requiring a high pH should not be kept on active soil.
- Avoid drying out: Have some substrate left over? Seal the bag tightly. Once the granules dry out, they lose much of their buffering capacity and become more fragile.
How many liters do you need?
For optimal performance, we recommend a substrate depth of at least 4 cm (1.6 inches). Calculate the required volume using the following formula:
(Aquarium length × Aquarium width × Desired substrate depth) / 1000
Example: if your aquarium measures 60 × 30 cm and you want a 4 cm substrate layer:
(60 × 30 × 4) / 1000 = 7.2 liters. In this case, an 8-liter bag is the ideal choice.

Posted on 29/03/2021Top spul, eigenlijk voor de cardina, maar ik heb er 3 neoncardima bakken op draaien. Planten vinden het top spul en alles gaat helemaal top.
