Seachem Matrix
Seachem Matrix is a filter media designed for highly efficient biological filtration in your aquarium. It consists of coarse, porous stones approximately 10 mm in size that effectively help remove harmful waste products such as ammonia and nitrite.
What makes Matrix different from plastic filter media?
- Huge surface area: According to Seachem, one litre of Matrix provides over 700 m² of effective biological surface area.
- Surface inside and out: Plastic filter media only provide a smooth outer surface. Matrix stones are filled with countless microscopic pores and channels.
- Complete biological filtration: Beneficial bacteria colonise the outer surface where they convert ammonia and nitrite. Deep inside the stones, oxygen levels are much lower, creating ideal conditions for specialised bacteria that can also reduce nitrate.
Directions & dosage
Use 250 ml of Matrix for every 200 litres of aquarium water. Matrix can be used in any type of filter but performs especially well in a canister filter. The media pieces are large enough that a filter bag is unnecessary in most applications.
Important product information & advice
Maintenance and cleaning: Matrix does not need replacing because it is a permanent biological filter media that does not become exhausted. However, debris can gradually clog the pores. It is therefore recommended to gently rinse the media regularly (for example once a month, depending on the aquarium's bioload) using aquarium water to maintain optimal water flow and filtration efficiency.
Nitrate reduction in practice
The development of denitrifying bacteria inside the pores may take several weeks to several months, depending on the biological load and filter conditions. Reducing nitrate to zero in a normally stocked aquarium is virtually impossible because feeding and waste continuously produce nitrate. However, Matrix helps keep nitrate levels consistently low and stable.
If nitrate levels remain high, it indicates that nitrate is being produced faster than it can be biologically removed. Adding more Matrix can increase biological filtration capacity, but persistently high nitrate levels may also result from overfeeding, excessive stocking, or insufficient water changes.
Natural variation
Seachem Matrix is a carefully selected, highly porous, inert natural stone that has been extensively tested in laboratories and thousands of aquariums worldwide. Because it is a natural product, individual pieces vary in size and colour, ranging from very light grey to dark grey or brown. These visual differences have absolutely no effect on the product's performance or safety.
