What does the NO2 value mean in an aquarium?

The NO2 value in an aquarium represents the nitrite level in the water. Nitrite is a toxic substance formed during the breakdown of ammonia (NH3) by bacteria and is later converted into the less harmful nitrate (NO3).

What is a good NO2 value for my aquarium?

Nitrite is highly dangerous to aquarium inhabitants, even at low concentrations. The ideal nitrite value for a well-functioning aquarium is 0 mg/l. Take action as soon as the value exceeds 0.3 mg/l.

What causes high NO2/nitrite levels in my aquarium?

High NO2 levels can have several causes:

• In a newly set up aquarium, there are not yet enough beneficial bacteria to convert nitrite into nitrate. It is therefore essential to only introduce fish once the aquarium is properly cycled. Measuring is knowing.
• A poorly functioning filter can result in insufficient conversion of nitrite into nitrate. Ensure your filter is clean and not clogged.
• Overstocking and overfeeding lead to a buildup of ammonia, which can indirectly cause high nitrite concentrations.
• Too little oxygen in the aquarium

What symptoms indicate high nitrite levels?

When observing fish, the following symptoms may indicate excessive nitrite levels in your aquarium:

• Difficulty breathing, with fish going to the surface for air or showing rapid gill movement.
• Fish become sluggish and inactive.
• Some fish may develop pale or dark patches due to stress.

How do I lower NO2/nitrite levels in my aquarium?

• Perform an immediate water change (1/3 of the water).
• Ensure the filter is functioning properly so bacteria can do their job effectively.
• Remove decaying organic matter such as plant debris and dead fish immediately.
• Optionally add nitrifying bacteria to boost the bacterial balance. These can also be added to a new aquarium to speed up the nitrogen cycle.
