Sera No3 nitrate-test
Sera NO3 Test - Nitrate Test
With the Sera NO3 (nitrate) test, you can quickly and easily determine the nitrate level of your aquarium or pond water. Suitable for approximately 60 tests.
What does the NO3 value mean in an aquarium?
The NO3 value in an aquarium represents the nitrate level of the water. This value is an important indicator of water quality and is one of the final stages of the nitrogen cycle. Nitrate is formed as a byproduct of the breakdown of waste such as fish excrement, decaying food, and dead plant material. This process is carried out by bacteria that convert ammonia (NH3) into nitrite (NO2) and then nitrite into nitrate (NO3). Aquarium plants absorb part of this nitrate as a nutrient.
What is a good NO3 value for my aquarium?
Nitrate is less toxic than ammonia and nitrite, but high concentrations can still be harmful to fish and plants. A safe nitrate level for most freshwater aquariums is between 10 and 25 mg/l. In aquariums without plants, the level may be slightly higher (up to about 50 mg/l), but higher levels can slow the growth of young fish.
What causes a high NO3 value?
A high nitrate level (NO3) can have several causes:
- Overstocking in the aquarium
- Insufficient water changes
- Overfeeding aquarium inhabitants
- Poor maintenance, such as not removing waste like dead leaves, leftover food, and excrement in time
Plants help reduce nitrate levels because they use nitrate as a nutrient source.
What are the effects of a high NO3 value?
At high NO3 levels (above 50 mg/l), the following problems may occur:
- Stress in aquarium inhabitants
- Reduced growth and reproduction
- Increased risk of disease
- Unwanted algae growth
