Dennerle Scaper's Soil Natural Mix – The foundation for a natural-looking aquascape

Dennerle Scaper's Soil Natural Mix is an active aquasoil developed for aquascaping and planted aquariums. Compared to standard dark aquasoil, this version offers more colour variation, including black, brown and reddish tones. This creates a subtle, natural-looking substrate that complements realistic aquarium landscapes.

Effect on water parameters

The aquasoil actively influences water chemistry. Through ion exchange, it lowers carbonate hardness (KH 0–2 °d) and generally creates slightly acidic conditions with a pH of approximately 5.0–6.0, depending on the aquarium's setup and cycling process.

This buffering effect helps create soft water conditions suitable for many tropical plants and aquatic animals. When combined with CO₂ fertilisation, the pH may fluctuate more dynamically, particularly during the first weeks after setup. Over time, the system generally stabilises within the buffering capacity of the substrate.

Supports healthy plant growth

The porous grain structure provides an excellent foundation for root development. The substrate contains minerals and bound nutrients that can become available to aquarium plants, supporting strong root-based growth.

A well-planted aquarium with sufficient lighting and CO₂ contributes to a stable ecosystem. Healthy plant growth can indirectly help limit algae by allowing plants to absorb nutrients more efficiently. However, the aquasoil itself does not prevent algae; it supports a balanced environment in which plants have the advantage.

Suitable for shrimp

This aquasoil is widely used in shrimp aquariums, especially for species that prefer soft, slightly acidic water, such as Crystal Red and Red Bee shrimp. During the initial phase, the substrate may cause slight fluctuations in water parameters, making a proper cycling period essential before introducing sensitive livestock.

The durable grain structure makes this aquasoil suitable for long-term use and for aquariums equipped with undergravel filters or where substrate disturbance is kept to a minimum.

Biological activity within the substrate

The porous surface of the granules provides extensive colonisation space for beneficial bacteria. This supports the biological breakdown of waste products within the substrate and contributes to the aquarium's overall nitrogen cycle.

Although the substrate contributes to biological filtration, it does not replace an external filtration system. Regular maintenance and effective filtration remain essential for maintaining a stable aquarium.
