Bilocil
Bilocil has been specially developed for the successful treatment of fish infected with skin or gill flukes.
Cichlids, particularly discus fish, can be heavily infested with gill flukes. These parasitic infections, if left untreated, can lead to a slow deterioration of the animals and may even be fatal. Young fish are even more sensitive and may die after a short time if not treated. For very young discus fish up to 3 months, Bilocil sensitive is recommended.
Skin flukes are often a problem in livebearing ornamental fish such as guppies, platies, swordtails, gouramis, and other labyrinth fish.
Recognizing gill and skin flukes in fish
- Monogenea are largely host-specific. The species that infests guppies or swordtails, for example, does not occur in other fish species in the same aquarium.
- An unmistakable sign of gill fluke infestation in discus fish is mouth protrusion and movements as if the fish were retching. In this way, the fish try, unsuccessfully, to rid themselves of the parasites.
- The flukes cause mucus formation in the gills and consequently reduced oxygen absorption. If left untreated, this eventually leads to deterioration and necrosis of the gill tissue in the affected animals. Adult discus fish can develop partial immunity and prevent mass reproduction of the parasites as long as their immune system allows.
- Infestation with skin and gill flukes is often accompanied by general symptoms. Livebearing toothcarps (guppies, swordtails, platies, etc.) sway in place, seek the water surface for better oxygen intake, and move very slowly. Without treatment, the aquarium inhabitants die out within a few weeks.
- Cichlids become darker in color, are skittish, and hide in the corners of the aquarium. Fish often rub themselves against objects or decorations.
Dosage and application
- Gill flukes:
- Day 1: 1 ml per 20 liters of aquarium water
- Day 3: 1 ml per 20 liters of aquarium water
- Day 5: 1 ml per 20 liters of aquarium water
No water changes are necessary between treatment days. After 7 days, the treatment is complete and 50% of the aquarium water should be changed.
- Skin flukes:
- Single treatment: 1 ml per 20 liters of aquarium water
Water changes may take place from the 2nd day after treatment.
During this treatment with Bilocil, no active filter media (such as activated carbon or phosphate remover) may be used. UV lamps must also be switched off.
The size of the aquarium to be treated should not be smaller than 40 liters and not larger than 1000 liters.
