Octocil
Manaus Octocil has been specially developed for the successful treatment of fish infected with intestinal flagellates. The formula has been stabilized using a special method, ensuring optimal absorption by the fish in the water.
Especially cichlids, particularly discus fish and angelfish, can be massively infected with intestinal flagellates. These are parasites that extract nutrients from the intestines of fish, which can lead to inflammation and changes in the intestine.
Octocil not only effectively kills these parasites, but also the encapsulated stages of this pathogen on the bottom of the aquarium.
Octocil can also be used preventively in a quarantine tank when introducing new fish.
Recognizing intestinal flagellates in fish
- Typical disease symptoms visible to the aquarist include refusal of food and white, slimy feces.
- Discus fish darken in color and become skittish. If left untreated, they die within a few days to weeks.
- After several weeks, the fish lose weight; crater-shaped holes appear in the head region of cichlids such as discus and Malawi cichlids. Small white dots appear first, and in an advanced stage it looks like a white protruding substance. Changes in the dorsal and caudal fins (holes and adhesions) can also indicate a flagellate infection.
- Necrosis of the tissue is often accompanied by bacterial infections; the holes become larger wounds and appear crater-shaped.
- This hole formation is partly due to the breakdown of the body’s own tissue, as the body reallocates nutrients needed for bone and cartilage formation.
Dosage and use
- Administer 1 ml per 20 liters of aquarium water for 5 days.
- During treatment, no active filter media (such as activated carbon or phosphate remover) may be used.
- UV lamps must be switched off.
- On the 6th day, the treatment is completed and at least 60% of the aquarium water must be replaced.
Healing usually begins within 2 to 3 days. It is important to get the fish eating again afterwards so that the gastrointestinal tract is reactivated.
